Amino acids work in the human body to build protein. Some amino acids, such as d-aspartic acid, are termed non-essential, which means that they occur naturally in the body. D-aspartic acid manages and controls the synthesis of the hormone, testosterone. Even though d-aspartic acid is produced in the body, deficiencies, causing male infertility, can exist. D-aspartic acid also produces a brain chemical or neurotransmitter, known as NMDA or N-methyl-D-aspartate, which regulates memory and growth.
What Does D-Aspartic Acid Do?
Used as a supplement, d-aspartic acid can be used to enhance testosterone levels in males. A 2009 Italian study demonstrated that testosterone levels improved by 42%, when volunteers consumed 10ml of a sodium d-aspartate solution for 12 consecutive days. Research, published in 2012, showed that when males with low levels of fertility were treated with 10ml of a d-aspartate solution for 3 months the quantity and motility of their sperm improved, and the number of partners who became pregnant also increased. A 2010 study of rats, whose diet was supplemented with D-aspartic acid, determined that the supplementation influences memory and learning in rat populations. These findings may be applicable to the human population.
How Much D-Aspartic Acid Should I Take?
The standard daily dose for D-aspartic acid is between 2 and 3 grams a day. Published studies, however, use different supplementation protocols. Research has demonstrated that men with fertility problems can take 2.66g daily for 90 days safely. Some foods, such as soy or corn protein, non-dairy creamers and simulated bacon, also contain D-aspartic acid.
When Should You Take D-Aspartic Acid?
It’s wise to discuss your concerns with a health professional, before supplementing with D-aspartic acid. Research shows that men with a low sperm count, whose partners have not become pregnant after trying for 2 years may benefit from taking an oral food supplement containing sodium D-Aspartate dissolved in water at lunch or dinner for 90 days.
However, for men with normal levels of testosterone, who want to improve their athletic performance, the possible benefits of supplementation last for only one to one and a half weeks. After discontinuing the supplement, testosterone levels quickly return to normal. A study, which attempted to improve lean body mass through supplementation with 3g of the acid for 28 consecutive days combined with resistance training showed that no significant increase occurred in muscle strength or body composition.
